Personal Retreat
When was the last time you took a week off solely for the purpose of your own reflection, renewal and growth? As you read this, I am in San Juan Capistrano, California, participating in the Ultimate Leadership course, one that I have recommended to many of my executive clients. Those who attended came back with rave reviews. I read most of the books by the program leaders, Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend and have been impressed and enlightened by their teachings on living a life that matters and achieving significance in marriage, parenting and leadership.
I look forward to uncovering some blind spots—you know those areas that you don’t know you don’t know. I welcome the intellectual stimulation that comes from interacting with other leaders on issues of ethics, personal balance, purpose and vision. I want to hear what God is leading me to do and how he would like to use me in this next phase of my life. Selfishly, I am very glad to get away from email, voice mail and my daily routine for a week. I intend to wake up early each morning and take brisk walks. I want to listen to the birds, breathe fresh air and experience solitude and silence.
I do not believe anyone can ever become a
deep person without
stillness and silence.

I share this to encourage you to take time out this year for your own growth, and treat yourself to a program that will make your mind think in new ways and renew your energy level with a fresh enthusiasm for life. There are many ways you can accomplish it. Be creative and investigate what’s available. One client, the managing partner of a CPA firm, is treating herself for the first time to a “post tax season” spa trip all by herself. Yes, she is taking a bold move by leaving her teenaged daughter and husband during the week and doing something for herself! Successful people know when a need that goes unmet will cost dearly. They know the value of continued growth, rest and recreation. Maybe you need a break. Ask those around you what the benefit could be!
